Ohuruogu winsWORLD champion, Christine Ohuruogu, has been confirmed as one of the star attractions at the Great North City Games on the Newcastle-Gateshead Quayside on September 14.

Fresh from her success at last month’s World Championships in Moscow, Ohuruogu will compete in the 150m as top-class athletics returns to a street circuit on the banks of the Tyne.

The 29-year-old Londoner’s appearance on the eve of the Great North Run will mark the end of a superb season that saw her produce a thrilling sprint finish to triumph in the World Championship final before completing a brilliant leg as Great Britain claimed a bronze medal in the 4x400m relay.

Ohuruogu already boasts a world title from 2007 and an Olympic gold from Beijing in 2008, and has surpassed the likes of Dame Kelly Holmes, Jessica Ennis-Hill, Sally Gunnell and Paula Radcliffe to become the most successful British female athlete of all time.

“Let’s remember she also has an Olympic silver medal from last year’s London Games under her belt and also several in the 4x400m relay,” said Pete Riley, the elite athlete manager for the Great North City Games.

“After her displays in Moscow, I’m sure she will receive a tremendous welcome from the home crowd on the Gateshead Quayside.

“It will be great to see her back at the meeting where she won the 150m in 2009, and she has also been a regular at the Great City Games Manchester, where she has appeared three times.”

Ohuruogu will take on USA’s Natasha Hastings, who is also stepping down from 400m, and Jamaican Olympic sprint relay gold medallist Aleen Bailey in a mouth-watering 150m race.

Now entering its fifth year, the Great North City Games has become an established highlight of the North-East sporting calendar.

This year, for the first time, the event will be an individual, as opposed to a team, competition, and further big-name competitors will be announced shortly.
