The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has explained that the delayed conduct of Mathematics and Agricultural Science papers at some centres was due to logistical and operational challenges, including a tragic accident that claimed the lives of three personnel.
The council made the statement on Monday, signed by Mrs. Moyosola Adesina, Head of Public Affairs. WAEC said the accident occurred while transporting sensitive examination materials interstate, severely disrupting the planned distribution schedule.
“The delay resulted partly from a devastating motor accident which claimed three personnel, affecting our timetable for conducting examinations,” the statement read. WAEC described the incident as heartbreaking and emphasized that emergency contingency measures were immediately activated to ensure exams were eventually conducted.
WAEC also cited late registration of candidates, finalization of examination modalities, security challenges, and protests against school abductions as additional factors that delayed delivery of exam materials to certain centres.
Despite the setbacks, WAEC assured the public that measures have been strengthened to guarantee smooth conduct of remaining papers, noting that improvements were recorded in examinations conducted on June 5.
The council expressed gratitude to education ministries, security agencies, and other stakeholders, describing them as dependable partners in ensuring effective service delivery. WAEC reaffirmed its commitment to academic credibility, examination integrity, and administrative excellence.
