The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has installed seven new X-ray scanning machines at Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos, Mr Yakubu Dati, General Manager, Corporate Communications, has said.
Addressing a news conference on Tuesday in Lagos, Datti said that five of the equipment were installed at the cargo basement of the international terminal.
He said that one was installed at the Hajj and Cargo terminal and another at the airport’s domestic terminal 1.
“This is in addition to existing security equipment at the airport.
“We will take further steps to improve safety and security at the airports by installing additional and more modern security equipment.
“This is in line with the ongoing transformation in the aviation sector,’’ he said.
He said the new scanning machines would be installed in other airports across the country. Datti said the machines included cargo screening machines, carry-on screening machines, hand-held metal detectors, 3-D body scanners, hold baggage screening machines and walk-through metal detectors.
The general manager said the scanners would help to ensure increased security surveillance of outgoing baggage destined for aircraft bulk hold.
“This is in addition to the CCTV cameras installed within the airports that will ensure that illegal or unapproved luggage is not loaded onto the aircraft,” he said.
Datti said the expansion and re-modelling of airports which resulted in alteration of their structural design also informed the provision of the new equipment.
