ASUU strike paralyses academic activities

ASUU_logoACADEMIC activities were paralysed across the country on Tuesday, no thanks to the indefinite strike embarked upon by members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).

In the University of Lagos, students who thought their lecturers would honour early morning lecturers were disappointed as they waited for hours without their lecturers turning up.

The strike affected teaching, supervision, statutory and ad-hoc meetings.

It was the same scenario in the University of Port Harcourt as students were seen in groups loitering all over lecture halls with no lecturer to attend to their academic needs.

Some non-academic staff were, however, seen at their duty posts.

Some of the lecturers at the University of Sokoto were seen in their offices but they later left after locking their offices.

At the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, no lecturer was seen. Majority of the students also vacated their hostels.

At the University of Ibadan, students left their academic rooms and retired to their halls. Lecturers went to their offices, but shunned lecture rooms.

Some students tried to persuade their lecturers to, at least, lecture them in the morning to no avail.

To keep themselves busy, the students started playing football.

The National Treasurer of ASUU, Dr Ademola Aremu, said the strike order was fully complied with at the institution, noting that the university community was carried along in the effort to re-position education in the country.

The UI Secretary of ASUU, Dr Ayodeji Omole, said: “We thought with a person like Jonathan, education will be better off, but we are worse off”.
