Rome underground trains crash, injure 21

Some 21 people were treated for injuries following a crash involving two underground trains in Rome on Friday.
The Atac transport company said in a statement that the accident on the city’s line B happened near the Euro Palasport stop.
The company added that services were interrupted and a replacement bus service put in place.
A spokesman for Ares 118, the local ambulance service, told newsmen that 21 people were taken to hospital but only two were seriously injured: one had a broken shoulder, another a broken pelvis.
“The others suffered bruises,’’ he said.
One passenger, identified only by his first name Francesco, said that hard braking caused him and others to fall on the floor.
“I started crawling through the carriage, looking for an escape route. It was incredibly scary, a nightmare,’’ he said.
Rome’s transport secretary, Guido Improta, who visited the crash scene, said an older train ran into the back of a newer model with the driver apparently ignoring warning signals.
“There was certainly human error,’’ he noted.
