Rising Insecurity in Nigeria Shows Limits of Military Force — Expert

A security expert has warned that Nigeria’s growing insecurity highlights the limitations of relying solely on military force, calling for a broader, people-focused strategy.

Rafiu Lawal, Executive Director of the Building Blocks for Peace Foundation, made the remarks during an interview in Abuja.

He noted that although security forces have achieved some progress, ongoing threats such as banditry, terrorism, and communal violence indicate that military action alone cannot deliver lasting peace.

According to Lawal, the situation across regions including the North-West, North-East, and North-Central is driven by deeper structural issues.

He identified poverty, unemployment, weak governance, and social inequality as key factors fueling insecurity in the country.

“Security challenges today are complex and require more than force. Without addressing underlying issues, the cycle of violence will continue,” he said.

Lawal explained that despite increased funding for military operations, new criminal networks continue to emerge, showing the need for preventive measures.

He advocated for a non-kinetic security approach, which focuses on development, community engagement, and social investment.

The expert stressed that improving access to education, healthcare, jobs, and food security is essential to reducing conflict and instability.

He also emphasised the importance of collaboration between government, civil society, traditional leaders, and local communities.

Lawal noted that trust between citizens and authorities is critical for effective intelligence gathering and conflict prevention.

He further pointed to corruption and institutional weaknesses as major barriers to effective security management.

Strengthening governance systems and ensuring accountability, he said, are just as important as deploying security personnel.

Despite current challenges, Lawal expressed optimism that Nigeria can overcome insecurity through a balanced and inclusive strategy.
