Sanwo-Olu Calls for Tax Agency Autonomy, Praises Lagos Revenue Growth

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has called for increased independence for tax authorities across Nigeria, stressing that autonomy is key to improving revenue generation.

The governor made this appeal while hosting members of the Joint Revenue Board (JRB) during its 159th meeting at the Lagos House in Marina.

Sanwo-Olu praised the Lagos State Internal Revenue Service (LIRS)for its role in boosting the state’s internally generated revenue (IGR) through consistent reforms and innovation.

He revealed that Lagos generated approximately N1.3 trillion in 2024, marking a significant increase compared to previous years.

According to the governor, IGR now contributes more than 60 per cent of the state’s annual budget, reflecting the success of deliberate policy and administrative strategies.

Sanwo-Olu attributed the growth to the adoption of digital tax systems, expansion of the taxpayer base, and improved engagement between authorities and residents.

He, however, emphasised that for other states to achieve similar success, tax agencies must operate without undue political interference.

The governor urged state leaders to ensure stability in leadership and provide operational freedom to revenue agencies to enhance efficiency and build public trust.

He added that taxes collected in Lagos are being invested in critical infrastructure, including transportation networks, healthcare facilities, and educational development.

Sanwo-Olu cited ongoing projects such as rail systems and road construction as evidence of the effective use of public funds.

Speaking at the event, Ayodele Subair, Executive Chairman of LIRS, described the JRB as a vital platform for improving coordination among tax authorities nationwide.

He noted that ongoing reforms in Nigeria’s tax system require stronger collaboration between federal and state agencies.

Similarly, Olusegun Adesokan, Executive Secretary of the JRB, commended Lagos State for its consistent performance in revenue generation.

He described the state as a model for tax administration, highlighting its strategic approach and long-term planning.

Also, Okon Okon Chairman of the Akwa Ibom State Internal Revenue Service, applauded Lagos for its infrastructure development, linking it to efficient revenue management.
