Qatar has called for renewed diplomatic efforts to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and restore discussions under the memorandum of understanding (MoU) between the United States and Iran as regional tensions continue to rise.
The Qatari Foreign Ministry said ongoing diplomatic efforts are focused on reducing tensions, restoring freedom of navigation and returning parties to negotiations.
Qatar’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Majed Al Ansari, made the remarks during a weekly media briefing in Doha on Tuesday.
Qatar Seeks De-escalation in Gulf Region
Al Ansari said recent developments, including what he described as a ceasefire violation and increased tensions around the Strait of Hormuz, have created the need for urgent diplomatic action.
He said Qatar believes the path forward depends on achieving a ceasefire, reopening the strategic waterway and restoring normal maritime movement.
“The only way to move forward is a ceasefire, the opening of the Strait of Hormuz and going back to normal or freedom of navigation and going back to the negotiations,” he said.
Oman and Iran Discuss Maritime Arrangements
The Qatari official said Doha was waiting for progress between Oman and Iran regarding navigation arrangements through the Strait of Hormuz.
According to him, an agreement between the two countries could help create conditions for the resumption of wider negotiations.
He said Iran and Oman had been engaged in discussions over maritime movement through the important shipping route.
Iran Announces Progress on New Maritime Route
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei earlier announced that Tehran and Muscat had reached an understanding on a proposed new maritime traffic route through the waterway.
Baghaei said the agreement would be completed as a package containing a navigation map and a joint statement between the two countries.
The development is expected to support efforts aimed at maintaining stability and ensuring safer movement through the strategic maritime passage.
Strait of Hormuz Remains Critical Global Trade Route
The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most important energy shipping routes, connecting the Persian Gulf with international waters.
Any prolonged disruption in the area could affect global oil markets, shipping operations and international trade.
Diplomatic efforts by Qatar and other regional actors are aimed at preventing further escalation and encouraging dialogue between major stakeholders.
