Wike Says Tinubu Faces Easier 2027 Election Due to Weak Opposition

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has said President Bola Tinubu may face a less difficult contest in the 2027 presidential election because of what he described as a weakened and divided opposition.

Wike made the statement on Tuesday in Abuja while commenting on the outcome of the recent Osun governorship election, where Governor Ademola Adeleke secured a second-term victory.

The minister argued that the strength of an opposition party is a major factor in determining whether it can successfully challenge an incumbent government.

Wike Compares 2027 Race With 2023 Election

Wike said the 2023 presidential election was a challenging contest for Tinubu, describing the political atmosphere at the time as uncertain.

According to him, the situation has changed significantly ahead of 2027 because opposition parties have not developed what he considers a strong and coordinated structure.

He said removing an incumbent government requires a well-organised opposition with a clear strategy.

“To remove a government, you need a strong, vibrant opposition that has spent over four years planning, not one that is constantly looking for a party to join,” Wike said.

Minister Praises Government’s Handling of Osun Election

Wike also defended the Tinubu administration’s approach to elections, saying the government deserves recognition for allowing democratic processes to operate without interference.

He rejected claims by some opposition groups that they defeated the All Progressives Congress (APC) despite alleged federal support.

According to him, political actors often interpret election outcomes differently depending on whether they win or lose.

“When they lose, they claim the government manipulated the process; when they win, they show off their might,” he said.

Wike Recalls Past Electoral Experiences

The FCT minister compared recent elections with what he described as previous experiences of federal influence during elections.

He specifically referred to the 2019 Rivers State governorship election, where he alleged that federal forces were heavily involved.

Wike questioned whether similar circumstances occurred during the Osun election.

“In Rivers State, in 2019, we saw what is called federal might. We saw soldiers taking over everywhere. Did anything like that happen in Osun?” he asked.

Opposition Divisions Could Affect National Race

Wike criticised opposition parties for what he described as internal disagreements and weak performances in recent governorship elections.

He pointed to the role played by the G5 Governors during the 2023 election, arguing that alliances and political structures remain important in national elections.

The minister said governorship elections are often influenced by local factors, while presidential elections require broader national organisation.

“Governorship elections rely on local variables, but a national election is a completely different ball game,” he said.

Political Debate Intensifies Ahead of 2027

Wike’s comments add to growing political discussions ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general election, as parties prepare to build alliances and select candidates.

While supporters of the ruling APC point to recent political developments as signs of strength, opposition parties continue to argue that voter concerns and national issues will determine the outcome of the next presidential contest.
