‎The Police Command in Osun State has directed political parties to suspend their planned rallies in Oriade Local Government Area of the state to prevent a possible outbreak of violence.

This is contained in a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abiodun Ojelabi, on Tuesday in Osogbo.

Ojelabi advised political parties to reschedule rallies earlier planned for Wednesday in the area, citing security concerns.

“The command wishes to advise all political parties, candidates, supporters and stakeholders to postpone their planned political gatherings, rallies, campaigns and processions scheduled to hold on Wednesday in Oriade Local Government Area to a new date.

“This advice is based on credible intelligence and prevailing security concerns within the local government area,” he said.

The police spokesperson noted that the directive was also informed by the non-cooperative attitude of some political actors, adding that efforts by the command to broker peace ended in a deadlock.

He further disclosed that a peace meeting earlier scheduled by the Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Gotan, with the concerned political parties could not hold.

Ojelabi said the directive was a proactive measure to prevent any breach of peace and breakdown of law and order, as well as to safeguard lives and property in the area.

“All political parties, candidates, supporters, followers and members of the public are hereby urged to comply in the interest of peace,” he said.

He reiterated the command’s commitment to ensuring a peaceful and secure environment, urging residents to remain law-abiding and cooperate with security agencies.
