The Ekiti State Police Command has commenced an investigation into a tragic stampede at a hotel in Ikere-Ekiti that resulted in the deaths of three individuals.
The incident, which occurred in the early hours of April 19 at Emirate Hotel, has drawn widespread concern, with authorities working to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the event.
According to the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Sunday Abutu, the victims include a hotel staff member and two students of Bamidele Olumiluwa University of Education, Science and Technology (BOUESTI), Ikere-Ekiti.
Preliminary findings indicate that the students had gathered at the hotel to celebrate their convocation ceremony held on April 18.
The situation reportedly escalated when a disagreement between two unidentified individuals turned into a physical altercation during the event.
As panic spread among attendees, many attempted to exit the venue at once, leading to a stampede that ultimately claimed the lives of the victims.
The police confirmed that the bodies have been moved to a morgue for autopsy as part of ongoing investigations.
Commissioner of Police in Ekiti State, Mr Falade Adegoroye, has directed a thorough inquiry into the incident and extended condolences to the families of those affected.
Authorities have assured the public that efforts are underway to uncover all factors that contributed to the tragedy.
The police also called for calm, promising that those found responsible will be held accountable in accordance with the law.
