Children in Katsina State have called on authorities to urgently address environmental and climate-related challenges threatening their safety and learning conditions.
The concerns were raised by members of the Child Rights Advocacy Club in Mashi Local Government Area during a visit to local government officials and traditional leaders.
The advocacy initiative, supported by Save the Children International under the Education Cannot Wait (ECW) programme, highlighted the growing impact of climate change on school environments.
According to the children, worsening environmental conditions, including flooding, poor sanitation, and extreme heat, are making schools unsafe and less conducive for learning.
Speaking on behalf of the group, the young advocates said their message reflects the struggles faced by many children across their communities.
They stressed that urgent action is needed to protect students’ health, improve school infrastructure, and ensure uninterrupted access to education.
Among their key demands, the children called for improved access to clean water in schools, particularly during flood periods when contamination risks increase.
They also urged authorities to provide functional and hygienic toilet facilities with handwashing stations to prevent disease outbreaks and eliminate open defecation.
The group further highlighted the need for better waste management systems and proper drainage infrastructure to reduce flooding around school premises.
In addition, the children advocated for tree planting initiatives and stricter enforcement against deforestation to help mitigate rising temperatures and environmental degradation.
They also raised concerns about school security, calling for fencing, deployment of guards, and measures to prevent grazing within school compounds.
Some of the most affected schools identified include Government Pilot Secondary School Majigiri, Afadu Primary School, and Doguru Primary and Secondary Schools.
In response, the Mashi Local Government Chairman, Salisu Kallah, represented by his deputy Jamilu Yusuf, assured the children that their concerns would be addressed.
He pledged to strengthen enforcement against illegal tree cutting and improve environmental safety in schools.
Similarly, the District Head of Mashi, Kabir Aminu, encouraged the formation of environmental clubs in schools to promote sustainability and community awareness.
The advocacy event also featured creative performances by the children, including drama presentations addressing gender inequality and environmental challenges.
