Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke has condemned the reported killings and destruction of property in Esa-Oke, Obokun Local Government Area, urging residents and political actors to avoid actions that could threaten peace ahead of the governorship election.
The governor’s reaction was contained in a statement issued by his spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed, in Osogbo on Thursday.
Reports indicated that one person was killed in Esa-Oke on Wednesday night, while another person who sustained gunshot injuries was receiving medical attention.
Security Agencies Directed to Investigate
Adeleke directed security agencies to increase surveillance and strengthen security operations in and around Esa-Oke.
He also ordered a comprehensive investigation into the incident and urged authorities to identify and prosecute those responsible.
The governor described the development as unfortunate and linked it to what he called reckless political incitement.
He appealed to political leaders and supporters across Ijeshaland and Osun State to avoid statements and actions capable of triggering violence.
“We all have families and friends. We should not preach violence,” Adeleke said.
Governor Expresses Concern Over Other Incidents
Adeleke also expressed sympathy with families affected by reported attacks involving members of the Accord Party.
He referenced allegations of killings, arrests and property damage involving party members in Ikire.
According to the governor, several homes belonging to Accord supporters were reportedly attacked and vandalised.
He called on political opponents to resolve differences through democratic processes rather than violence.
“I challenge our opponents to let us fight through the ballot. Since we are practising democracy, we must allow our people to vote,” he said.
Adeleke Calls for Peaceful Election
The governor urged residents of Esa-Oke, Ijeshaland and other parts of Osun State to reject retaliation and avoid actions that could worsen tensions.
He stressed that every voter should have the freedom to participate in the election process without fear or intimidation.
Adeleke called on political stakeholders to prioritise peace and warned against individuals who may attempt to exploit political disagreements to create conflict.
He maintained that the forthcoming election should be determined through peaceful participation and the will of voters.
