The National Population Commission (NPC) has announced the death of its Chairman, Dr Aminu Yusuf, describing his passing as a significant loss to the commission and Nigeria.
The commission confirmed that Yusuf died in Abuja on Friday at the age of 66 after a brief illness.
The announcement was contained in a statement issued by the Director of Public Affairs at the NPC, Mrs Adelayo Olurode, who expressed sadness over the death of the commission’s chairman.
According to the statement, Yusuf’s death represents the loss of a dedicated public servant whose contributions focused on strengthening national development and improving the quality of demographic data management in Nigeria.
Yusuf’s leadership at NPC
Dr Aminu Yusuf was appointed and sworn in as the eighth substantive Chairman of the National Population Commission by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on December 3, 2025.
During his time leading the commission, Yusuf introduced a Seven-Point Agenda aimed at repositioning the NPC and improving its capacity to deliver accurate population and demographic information for national planning.
The NPC said his leadership was marked by commitment, strategic direction and efforts to enhance the role of population data in governance and development.
A career spanning public service and community development
Born on April 15, 1960, in Wushishi, Niger State, Yusuf had a long career that covered education, politics, governance and community service.
Before becoming NPC chairman, he served as Executive Chairman of Wushishi Local Government Area, was a Member-elect of the Niger State House of Assembly, and served on the Board of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC).
He also held the position of Special Adviser on Political Affairs to the Governor of Niger State.
Until his appointment to the NPC, Yusuf served as National President of the Niger State College of Education Alumni Association, Minna.
He was also Co-Chairman of the Senator Abubakar Sani Bello Skill Acquisition and Development Committee, where he contributed to youth empowerment and development initiatives.
NPC pays tribute
Olurode described the late chairman as a patriotic Nigerian, experienced administrator and compassionate leader who remained committed to national progress.
She said Yusuf’s dedication to improving Nigeria’s demographic information system would remain part of his legacy.
“The commission has lost a dedicated patriot, an astute administrator, and a compassionate leader whose commitment to national development and the generation of reliable demographic data was unwavering,” she said.
The NPC extended condolences to President Tinubu, the Federal Government, the government and people of Niger State, as well as Yusuf’s family, friends and associates.
The commission also prayed for the repose of his soul and asked God to grant his loved ones strength during the period of mourning.
