The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Kaduna State has called on Governor Uba Sani to accept responsibility for the state’s debt situation and present a clear plan for addressing the financial challenges facing residents.
The opposition party made the call in a statement issued by its Kaduna State Chairman, Mr Edward Masha, following comments by the governor during a recent interview on Channels Television.
Governor Sani had disclosed that Kaduna State was spending about N6.7 billion monthly on servicing inherited loans.
PDP challenges governor over loan history
Reacting to the disclosure, the PDP argued that the governor should not distance himself from the $350 million World Bank loan, which the party alleged he supported while serving as Senator representing Kaduna Central.
According to the PDP, Sani, who was Chairman of the Senate Committee on Banking at the time, played an important role in securing approval for the facility in March 2020 after it was initially rejected by the eighth Senate.
The party claimed that Sani had previously expressed confidence that the administration of former Governor Nasir El-Rufai would manage the loan effectively.
The PDP also recalled that some Kaduna senators during the eighth Senate — Shehu Sani, Suleiman Hunkuyi and Danjuma La’ah — had opposed the loan, warning that additional borrowing could worsen the state’s financial situation.
The opposition party alleged that Sani criticised those objections at the time, describing their position negatively.
PDP demands debt management strategy
The party said a leader who supported a major financial decision should also be willing to address the consequences associated with it.
It urged Governor Uba Sani’s administration to provide a transparent debt management strategy that would protect Kaduna taxpayers and ensure responsible use of public resources.
The PDP also called on the government to improve the implementation of the 2026 Kaduna State budget, alleging that capital expenditure performance remained below 20 per cent by the second quarter of the year.
It further claimed that spending performance in the health sector was around five per cent, urging the administration to prioritise projects that directly affect citizens.
Party raises concerns over development projects
The PDP challenged the Kaduna State Government to fulfil its reported commitment to deliver N100 million worth of projects in each of the state’s 255 wards.
The party said such commitments should result in visible and measurable improvements in communities across the state.
It urged the administration to move away from what it described as political blame and focus on improving internally generated revenue, managing debts effectively and reducing dependence on federal allocations.
The PDP maintained that Kaduna residents deserve transparency, accountability and concrete results from government policies.
