The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has expressed concern over the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC)’s alleged failure to comply with court rulings, warning that the situation could impact preparations for the 2027 general elections.
In a statement issued in Lagos, NNPP National Secretary, Ogini Olaposi, said unresolved internal leadership disputes—if not addressed in line with court directives—could create legal complications capable of disrupting the electoral timetable.
Olaposi criticised what he described as non-compliance with judicial decisions, stressing that adherence to court orders is essential for maintaining the integrity of Nigeria’s democratic process.
He referenced a Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court ruling which reportedly directed INEC to recognise the National Working Committee led by Dr Agbo Major within a specified timeframe.
According to him, the commission has yet to act on the directive weeks after the judgment, despite being officially served.
The party maintained that delays in recognising its leadership structure could affect its ability to adequately prepare for the 2027 elections.
Olaposi warned that the NNPP may initiate legal action, including contempt proceedings, if the situation is not resolved promptly.
He added that the party could pursue the matter up to the Supreme Court if necessary.
The NNPP also called on the Federal Government, the Attorney-General of the Federation, and the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) to intervene and ensure compliance with judicial rulings.
Olaposi emphasised the need for institutions to uphold the rule of law, noting that failure to do so could undermine public confidence in the electoral system.
He further suggested reforms within INEC, particularly in its legal department, to strengthen institutional accountability and prevent similar disputes in the future.
The party warned that unresolved issues could have broader implications for Nigeria’s democracy if not urgently addressed.
