The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), led by Dr. Boniface Aniebonam, has attributed setbacks in concluding aspirant screenings and scheduling its primaries to delays by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
The party announced that it may resort to protests in Abuja if the commission continues to impede its preparations for the 2027 general elections. National Secretary Mr. Ogini Olaposi accused INEC of failing to comply with court orders to recognize the Agbo Major-led National Working Committee and revert the party to its original logo, color, and symbol.
Olaposi criticized INEC for maintaining recognition of a splinter faction led by Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso, despite Federal Capital Territory High Court and Owerri Appeal Court rulings directing the commission to correct the registration. He emphasized that the delays violate constitutional provisions, undermine judicial authority, and threaten NNPP’s ability to participate fully in elections.
The NNPP warned that continued inaction by INEC may compel the party to mobilize protests, asserting its constitutional right to contest elections and safeguard its members’ interests. Olaposi urged the commission to enforce the court orders to restore transparency, neutrality, and fairness in the electoral process.
