The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) has reported a sharp increase in the retail price of kerosene across Nigeria. According to the Kerosene Price Watch for April 2026, the average price per litre rose from N2,430.38 in March to N2,976.94 in April, representing a 22.49% month-on-month increase.
Year-on-year, the price per litre jumped 34.12% from N2,219.69 in April 2025. Meanwhile, the average retail price per gallon rose from N10,936.71 in March 2026 to N13,396.23 in April, a similar 22.49% increase, and a 61.50% year-on-year rise from April 2025.
Regional analysis showed significant disparities. Sokoto recorded the highest litre price at N3,965.10, followed by Kebbi (N3,808.75) and Lagos (N3,790.90). Conversely, the lowest prices were observed in Bayelsa (N1,815.40), Kogi (N1,982.02), and Yobe (N2,235.77).
By zones, the North-West had the highest average price per litre at N3,437.15, with the North-East at N2,987.65, while the South-East recorded the lowest at N2,674.61.
For gallons, Sokoto again topped the chart at N17,842.96, followed by Kebbi (N17,139.38) and Lagos (N17,059.05). Bayelsa had the lowest at N8,069.28, with Kogi (N8,919.09) and Yobe (N10,060.99) following. Zone analysis showed the North-West leading at N15,467.16 per gallon, while the South-East remained lowest at N12,035.73.
The NBS report highlights the growing burden of energy costs on Nigerian households, emphasizing regional disparities and urging attention to supply and pricing mechanisms.
