Mexico’s Foreign Affairs Ministry has complained to the U.S. government on behalf of two deported undocumented migrants who accuse U.S. authorities of violating their human rights during deportation proceedings.
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said the two migrants are a Mexican man and a Guatemalan woman who arrived in Mexico on the latest deportation flights.
The president did not specify what type of mistreatment the migrants received.
Sheinbaum said the decision was made to have the Foreign Ministry file a complaint against the U.S. Customs and Border Protection Agency, formally denounce the U.S. violations, and have the case reviewed.
During his reelection campaign, U.S. President Donald Trump pledged to carry out large-scale deportations of illegal immigrants once he took office.
After his inauguration on January 20, deportation operations have ramped up in several parts of the United States, reportedly focusing on criminals.
On January 20-26, 5,282 migrants aboard civilian flights were returned to Mexico from the United States, with 4,083 having Mexican nationality.
On January 27, 527 migrants (355 of them with Mexican nationality) were returned to Mexico, and on Jan. 28, another 435.
“In all cases, when they arrive in Mexico, they arrive without handcuffs, without any gear. When they arrive, they are interviewed to find out if their human rights were violated,” Sheinbaum said.
On Wednesday, Trump ordered the Pentagon and the Department of Homeland Security to prepare a facility to hold up to 30,000 migrants at Guantanamo Bay, a U.S. naval base located on the southeastern coast of Cuba.
