A legal practitioner, Mr. Abdulganiyu Ahmed, has called on the Federal Government to ensure strict adherence to the federal character principle in governance as a way of strengthening democracy and promoting national unity in Nigeria.
Ahmed made the appeal in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Saturday in Ilorin, stressing that inclusiveness remains critical to sustaining democratic stability in the country.
He argued that perceptions of exclusion among ethnic groups and regions continue to undermine democratic progress, noting that some groups are often labelled as minorities and subsequently disadvantaged in appointments, employment, and political representation.
“Democracy must be rooted in inclusiveness, but unfortunately some groups are unfairly treated as minorities in Nigeria,” he said.
Ahmed maintained that unequal access to opportunities across geopolitical zones fuels resentment and weakens citizens’ sense of belonging.
“When people feel ignored or cheated, it weakens unity and deepens divisions within the country,” he added.
He called for a balanced quota and representation system that guarantees fair treatment for all regions and ethnic groups, stressing that such reforms would enhance national cohesion, reduce discrimination, and promote development.
The lawyer also linked Nigeria’s democratic challenges to poor management of public resources, alleging that some political leaders prioritize personal gain over public welfare.
According to him, the concentration of national wealth in the hands of a few elites has widened inequality, leaving the majority of citizens struggling despite the country’s democratic system.
Ahmed urged leaders to embrace accountability, discipline, and responsible governance, emphasizing that public resources must be used for the collective benefit of all Nigerians rather than personal or family interests.
