The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has confirmed the death of retired Maj.-Gen. Rabe Abubakar, who was abducted by terrorists and later died while in captivity.
The announcement was made on Saturday in Abuja by the Director of Defence Information, Maj.-Gen. Samaila Uba, who expressed the deep sorrow of the Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN) over the incident.
Uba said the military initially withheld information about the abduction to avoid undermining ongoing rescue operations being carried out by security agencies. He added that all available operational resources were deployed in efforts to secure the safe release of the retired officer.
“The DHQ regrets to announce the passing of retired Maj.-Gen. Rabe Abubakar, who tragically lost his life in captivity following his abduction,” he said.
He extended condolences to the family of the deceased, describing him as a respected senior officer who served Nigeria with distinction.
Uba noted that Abubakar had an illustrious military career, serving in several strategic positions, including as spokesman for military formations and later as Director of Defence Information, where he played a key role in communicating military operations to the public.
He also highlighted the late officer’s contributions to counter-insurgency operations, military professionalism, and national security initiatives, describing his service as exemplary and dedicated to national unity.
According to him, the incident has further strengthened the resolve of the military to intensify operations against terrorists, bandits, and other criminal groups responsible for insecurity across the country.
Uba said ongoing military operations nationwide have been reinforced in response to rising cases of abductions and violent attacks.
“The Armed Forces remain committed to dismantling terrorist networks and restoring lasting peace and security across Nigeria,” he said.
He reaffirmed the military’s determination to defend the nation’s sovereignty, protect citizens, and ensure that those behind acts of terrorism are brought to justice.
“We assure Nigerians that the Armed Forces will not relent until peace is fully restored and criminal elements are held accountable,” he added.
