The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has declared Yahaya Bello of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as the winner of Saturday’s supplementary election in Kogi State.
Bello emerged the winner after election in 91 Polling Units where supplementary election was held.
Declaring the results, the Returning Officer, Prof. Emmanuel Kucha, said Bello scored 247,752 to defeat the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, Governor Idris Wada, who got 204,877 votes.
The earlier election, held on November 21, was declared inconclusive. Shortly before the announcement in Lokoja, the APC candidate then, Prince Abubakar Audu, died on November 22.
The APC later sent Bello’s name to INEC as Audu’s replacement with Audu’s running, James Faleke, as Bello’s running mate, an action which sparked protests between supporters of Bello and Faleke.
Faleke has vowed to challenge the decision in court, insisting that he remains the party’s candidate.
Based on the outcome of the supplementary election of Saturday, Bello scored 6,885 votes, while Wada got 5,363.
