The Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) and the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) have praised NNPC Retail Ltd. for introducing a technology-driven smart fuel station equipped with self-service fueling and electric vehicle charging facilities.
The new 24-hour facility was commissioned along Bill Clinton Drive, Airport Road, Abuja, as part of efforts to modernise Nigeria’s downstream petroleum sector.
Smart Technology Meets Energy Services
The facility combines conventional petroleum retail services with emerging technologies, including automated fuel dispensing, electric vehicle (EV) charging stations, Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) services, automated car wash systems and vehicle maintenance services.
The development represents a shift toward a more technology-focused and customer-friendly petroleum retail environment.
NMDPRA Commends Innovation
The Chief Executive of The Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) Rabiu Umar, represented by Dr Mustapha Lamorde, Executive Director of Health, Safety, Environment and Community, described the project as a reflection of the increasing role of technology in Nigeria’s downstream industry.
He said modern petroleum facilities must combine efficiency with safety, environmental responsibility and sustainable practices.
According to him, the integration of self-service fuel pumps, EV charging points, LPG facilities and vehicle services demonstrates how the petroleum sector is adapting to changing global trends.
Umar congratulated NNPC Limited and NNPC Retail Limited on the initiative, urging the company to expand similar facilities across the country.
NIS Highlights Energy Transition Benefits
The Comptroller-General of Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), Kemi Nandap, also commended the project, describing it as a sign of forward-thinking investment.
Represented by Deputy Comptroller-General Saidu Daura, Nandap said the inclusion of electric vehicle charging infrastructure reflects global movement toward cleaner energy and smart transportation.
She noted that technology-based investments could create employment opportunities, promote skills development and attract new areas of industrial growth.
Supporting Nigeria’s Sustainable Future
The NIS leadership said modern infrastructure, secure systems and sustainable development must progress together to strengthen Nigeria’s economy.
Nandap described the smart station as more than a fuel facility, saying it represents confidence in Nigeria’s ability to embrace innovation and build a technologically advanced economy.
She expressed hope that the project would encourage more private and public investments in sustainable energy solutions.

The launch comes as Nigeria’s petroleum industry continues to experience reforms aimed at improving efficiency, encouraging investment and responding to global energy changes.
With increasing attention on alternative energy sources and cleaner transportation systems, facilities combining petroleum services with electric mobility infrastructure are expected to become more common.
