The Fiscal Responsibility Commission (FRC) has stated that Nigeria’s new tax reforms will boost revenue collection, improve transparency, and strengthen accountability in public financial management.
Mr. Charles Abana, Acting Chairman of the FRC, made the remarks in an interview with our correspondence on Saturday in Abuja. He said the reforms are designed to modernize the tax system, align tax laws with current economic realities, and support better governance nationwide.
“These reforms are a positive step toward improving revenue generation in the country,” Abana said, urging Nigerians to embrace tax compliance as a civic duty. He added that technology and emerging businesses have created the need for updated tax laws that reflect modern economic activities.
The Acting Chairman explained that the FRC contributed ideas during the consultation process preceding the reforms, many of which were incorporated into the new laws. He highlighted that accountability in tax collection and spending is crucial to maintaining public trust.
Abana emphasized the importance of wider public enlightenment, urging government agencies, civil society, and media organizations to educate citizens about the reforms in both English and local languages. He noted that a proper understanding of the new tax system would encourage voluntary compliance.
On digitalization, Abana noted that the adoption of technology will enhance monitoring, transparency, and efficiency in public finance management. He explained that digital tools allow for faster tracking of government revenues and expenditures, reduce errors, and improve accountability.
“The commission is developing customized platforms and collaborating with software developers to strengthen its monitoring capacity and promote prudent management of public resources,” he said.
Abana also emphasized cooperation with key government agencies, including those responsible for finance and debt management, as critical to effective policy implementation and fiscal accountability.
He concluded that the reforms, coupled with technology adoption and stakeholder collaboration, are expected to enhance service delivery and foster trust between government and citizens.
