Five adult men have died in a road traffic accident involving a Toyota Camry and an Iveco truck on the Lagos-Badagry Expressway, the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) has confirmed.
The accident occurred at about 5:16 a.m. on Saturday around Sawmill, close to Mowo Bus Stop along the expressway.
LASEMA Permanent Secretary, Dr Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, disclosed the incident in a statement issued in Lagos.
Camry crashes into oncoming truck
According to preliminary findings, the Toyota Camry, with registration number FKJ 630KS, collided head-on with an Iveco truck marked T28081 LA.
Oke-Osanyintolu said the initial investigation indicated that alleged speeding and reckless driving by the Camry driver may have contributed to the crash.
He explained that the driver reportedly lost control of the vehicle, crossed into the opposite lane and struck the approaching truck.
Following an emergency call, LASEMA deployed its Dolphin Team to the accident scene to begin rescue and recovery operations.
Bodies recovered and vehicles removed
The LASEMA official said the five victims were recovered from the crash scene and their remains were respectfully packaged before being handed over to officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC).
Two tow trucks were subsequently deployed to remove the damaged vehicles and restore normal movement along the affected section of the expressway.
After the recovery operation, the vehicles were taken to the Morogbo Police Division, while the road was cleared and reopened to motorists.
Oke-Osanyintolu expressed sympathy to the families of those who lost their lives and prayed for the peaceful repose of the victims.
LASEMA warns motorists against speeding
The LASEMA permanent secretary urged motorists to avoid excessive speed, dangerous overtaking and other reckless driving practices.
He particularly advised drivers to exercise greater caution during early-morning journeys when visibility and road conditions can increase driving risks.
Oke-Osanyintolu stressed that road safety was a shared responsibility and urged motorists to comply with traffic regulations to help prevent avoidable deaths.
He reaffirmed LASEMA’s commitment to rapid emergency response and cooperation with other agencies to protect lives and property across Lagos.
The multi-agency response to the crash involved LASEMA, Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), FRSC and officers of the Nigeria Police Force from Morogbo Division.
