President Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday inaugurated the construction of a 260-kilometre highway at Obun Village, Akamkpa Local Government Area of Cross River.
Buhari said during the inauguration that he came to the event because of the significance his administration attached to the project.
“That I am here today in person shows the significance the Federal Government attaches to this project. This is my first working visit to any state since my presidency,’’ he said.
He commended the governor of the state and his team for conceptualising the project, adding that the highway and the Bakassi Seaport would facilitate economic activities in Cross River State and Nigeria at large.
The president assured the government and people of the state of his support to complete the project in time and promised to come back for its commissioning.
Speaking earlier, Governor Ben Ayade said that the super-highway was one of his projects to fast-track the economic development of the state.
Ayade said the highway would serve as an evacuation point for goods from the proposed Bakassi Seaport to the northern parts of the country as well as neighbouring countries.
He said the project was a public-private partnership initiative, adding that it would be dualised with digital facilities.
Ayade explained that it was the desire of his administration to change the state from over-dependence on federal allocation to a self-sustaining economy.
He said that the project would terminate in five years, and solicited for the cooperation of the Federal Government.
Governors Emmanuel Udom of Akwa Ibom and Rochas Okorocha of Imo were some of the dignitaries that attended the occasion.
