The Nigerian Army has renewed its strategic partnership with King’s College London in the United Kingdom to strengthen leadership training, defence research and professional development among senior military officers.
The renewed agreement, facilitated through the Nigerian Army Resource Centre (NARC) in Abuja and the university’s African Leadership Centre, is expected to deepen academic cooperation and expand opportunities for knowledge exchange.
The Director-General of NARC, retired Major-General James Myam, announced the development in a statement issued on Wednesday.
Nigerian Army, King’s College London Sign Revised Agreement
Myam disclosed that he led a delegation to King’s College London, where representatives of both institutions signed a revised Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).
The partnership was originally established in 2021 to support strategic leadership education, joint research and professional capacity building.
According to the NARC director-general, the renewed agreement reflects the institutions’ shared interest in developing leadership expertise and strengthening cooperation on defence and security matters.
He expressed appreciation to the African Leadership Centre for maintaining the relationship and hosting the Nigerian delegation during the signing ceremony.
Partnership to Strengthen Military Leadership Development
Myam said the Nigerian Army remains committed to improving the professional competence of its personnel through partnerships with respected academic institutions.
He explained that leadership development, research and the exchange of knowledge are important to preparing senior military officers for complex responsibilities.
The renewed arrangement is expected to create further opportunities for strategic leadership education and collaborative academic activities.
It will also support the sharing of research findings and professional expertise between the Nigerian Army Resource Centre and King’s College London’s African Leadership Centre.
NARC Highlights Role of Research in National Security
The director-general described the Nigerian Army Resource Centre as an institution dedicated to developing research-informed approaches to Nigeria’s defence and security challenges.
He said the centre’s work focuses on generating practical knowledge that can contribute to better strategic decision-making and professional military development.
Myam maintained that cooperation with international academic institutions could strengthen the Army’s capacity to address evolving security concerns through education and evidence-based research.
He reaffirmed the military’s commitment to building institutional relationships that promote learning, professional growth and improved leadership capacity.
Renewed Agreement Expands International Academic Cooperation
The revised MoU is expected to reinforce cooperation between the Nigerian Army Resource Centre and the African Leadership Centre in areas including leadership education, knowledge sharing and joint research.
The partnership also provides a framework for sustained engagement between military professionals and academic researchers.
Although the statement did not disclose the financial terms, specific training schedules or number of officers expected to participate, the agreement signals continued cooperation between the two institutions.
For the Nigerian Army, the renewed partnership forms part of efforts to strengthen human capital development and promote research-based approaches to military leadership and national security.
