athletic_trackThe Athletics Federation of Nigeria will on Friday hold a one-day Relays/ CAA Golden Grand Prix at the Warri Township Stadium.

The one-day competition is a premium event in the calendar of Confederation of African Athletics (CAA).

‘A’ grade events at this edition include the Men 100m, and 400m. For the Women, the ‘A’ events are 100m, 400m, and 400m H. The classic events for Men-5000m, Javelin, Long Jump and Women-100m H, High Jump, Long Jump.

Apart from the premium and classic events, there are also some promotional events. They are 110m H, 3000m SC, 4x100m & 4x400m for men and for the women 800m, 5000m, 4x100m & 4x400m.

While competitions for positions in the individual events will be stiff because of the juicy prize money for top finishers, the relay events will be more competitive as it provides opportunities for countries that have not qualified for the relay events of the 2013 World Championships in Athletics slated for Russia to qualify.

Achieving this feat in Warri will enable them showcase their talents at the world stage where the stakes are higher.

The top three countries in the relay events will be presented with medals; there is no prize money for relay winners.

Like it is done in other parts of the world, the meet organizers would only be responsible for local transportation, accommodation and feeding within Nigeria of a maximum of 5 athletes per relay event per team. Each participating country will be responsible for their international transportation.

Olukayode Thomas, Head of Communications and Media, of the Athletics Federation Nigeria (AFN), told newsmen that athletes from USA, Great Britain, Ghana, Morocco and other parts of the world will start arriving Nigeria from tomorrow to participate in the CAA premium event.
