The University of Ilorin says it has capacity to absorb only 10 per cent of the 107,000 candidates who applied in the 2016/2017 admission exercise.
The Vice Chancellor of the university, Prof. AbdulGaniyu Ambali, said this at a press briefing to herald the 32nd convocation of the institution on Tuesday in Ilorin.
Ambali said that in view of this, the admission process would be keen and thorough.
He warned candidates not to patronise any staff of the institution for admission that would turn out to be fake.
“It is the institution that has mandate to give admission and not any staff member of the university,’’ he said.
The vice chancellor said that staff of the university do not have mandate to give admission while machinery had been put in place to check and detect fake admissions.
He recalled that in previous years, some students had fallen into the hands of unscrupulous staff of the institution who gave them fake admission letters.
“It took us time to dig out those having fake admissions and when we got them, we told them to step aside,’’ he said.
Ambali said that the university also retrenched some workers that were caught in fake admission scandal.
He also said that the priority being given to research and training had continued to raise the university’s profile on publications.
“It is for the totality of what makes Unilorin tick in the discharge of its mandate that makes it to remain the first university of choice for the third consecutive year,’’ he said.
Ambali also disclosed that 8,038 students would graduate during the 2015/2016 convocation slated for October 21 and 22.
According to him, these comprised of 6,069 undergraduate students as well as 1,903 postgraduate and 66 diploma students.
