A Las Vegas jury has convicted former gang leader Duane “Keffe D” Davis for the murder of legendary American rapper and actor Tupac Shakur, nearly three decades after the hip-hop icon was killed.
Davis, 63, was found guilty on Monday of first-degree murder with the use of a deadly weapon over the September 7, 1996, drive-by shooting that claimed Shakur’s life.
The verdict was delivered after less than three hours of jury deliberation following a weeks-long trial at the Clark County District Court in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Decades-old case reaches verdict
The conviction marks a major development in one of the most famous unsolved murder cases in music history.
Davis, a former leader of the South Side Compton Crips, was accused of organising the attack that killed Shakur, although prosecutors did not claim he was the person who fired the shots.
According to prosecutors, the killing was carried out as retaliation following an earlier confrontation involving Davis’ nephew, Orlando Anderson, and members of Shakur’s entourage at the MGM Grand Casino in Las Vegas on the night of the shooting.
Investigators alleged that Davis helped arrange the attack and obtained the firearm used in the crime while travelling in a white Cadillac with Anderson and two other individuals.

On the night of the attack, Shakur was travelling in a BMW driven by Marion “Suge” Knight, co-founder of Death Row Records, when a white Cadillac pulled alongside the vehicle near the Las Vegas Strip.
Gunmen opened fire, striking Shakur multiple times.
The rapper died six days later, on September 13, 1996, at the age of 25.
For years, the case remained one of America’s most closely followed unsolved celebrity murders until Davis was arrested in September 2023 and charged.

His sister, Sekyiwa Shakur, cried following the verdict and later embraced prosecutors.
Shakur’s cousin, Aiysha Obafemi, said the family was relieved by the outcome and thanked the jury, supporters and fans who continued to seek justice.
She also paid tribute to Tupac’s mother, Afeni Shakur, describing her as a woman whose determination helped keep the search for justice alive.
The family said the verdict was an important moment but emphasised that Tupac’s cultural influence would continue beyond the courtroom.
