Members of Nigeria’s women’s national basketball team, D’Tigress, have received housing documents and national honours promised by Bola Ahmed Tinubu following their victory at the 2025 Women’s AfroBasket tournament in Côte d’Ivoire.
The presentation took place in Lyon, France, during the ongoing FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup Qualifying Tournament.
Officials of the National Sports Commission (NSC), led by Chairman Shehu Dikko and Director-General Bukola Olopade, handed over the certificates for the national honours alongside title documents for houses allocated to the players in Abuja.
Dikko said the fulfilment of the pledge reflected the federal government’s determination to recognise excellence and honour commitments made to Nigerian athletes.
He noted that the current administration had acted swiftly in delivering the promised rewards, unlike past situations where such pledges remained unfulfilled for years.
According to him, the gesture demonstrates the government’s resolve to rebuild confidence in the country’s sports sector.
Dikko commended the players for their dedication and patriotism, adding that their achievements had elevated Nigeria’s reputation on the global sporting stage.
He also revealed that the cash incentives earlier announced by the President are currently being processed and would soon be paid directly to the beneficiaries.
Olopade said the government’s prompt action reflects a new approach to sports administration in Nigeria, where athletes receive timely recognition and support.
He added that rewarding sporting excellence encourages athletes to strive for greater achievements while representing the country.
President of the Nigeria Basketball Federation, Musa Kida, expressed appreciation to the President for prioritising the welfare of Nigerian athletes.
The team’s head coach, Rena Wakama, also thanked the government for its support, promising that the squad would continue to make Nigerians proud in international competitions.
Team captain Amy Okonkwo conveyed the gratitude of the players, assuring that the team remains committed to delivering more victories for the nation.
