Student Loan Scheme: NELFUND Denies Suspending Upkeep Allowances

The Nigerian Education Loan Fund has dismissed a viral document claiming that upkeep allowance payments under the Federal Government’s Student Loan Scheme have been suspended.

NELFUND said the document, which circulated on social media and related to the 2025/2026 academic session, was fake and did not come from the Fund.

The clarification was issued by the Fund’s Director of Strategic Communications, Oseyemi Oluwatuyi, who said the public should ignore the misleading publication.

According to Oluwatuyi, the document was falsely attributed to her office and should not be treated as an official communication from NELFUND.

She said neither the Federal Government nor NELFUND had announced or approved the suspension of upkeep allowance payments to eligible student beneficiaries.

The fake notice had claimed that upkeep funds for May, June and later months had not been released.

It also alleged that the suspension was temporary and that payments would resume after outstanding allocations were received.

NELFUND rejected the claims and said student loan and upkeep allowance disbursements were still being carried out in line with its mandate.

The Fund said its role remained to provide financial support to qualified students in public tertiary institutions across Nigeria.

Oluwatuyi urged students, parents, schools and the general public to rely only on NELFUND’s official communication channels for accurate information.

She warned that fabricated documents and AI-generated materials were increasingly being used to spread false information and weaken public confidence.

The spokesperson advised beneficiaries to verify any information about the student loan scheme before sharing it online.

She said the Fund remained committed to transparency, accountability and responsible communication with the public.

NELFUND also assured eligible beneficiaries that approved tuition and upkeep payments would continue according to established guidelines.
