Ahead of the 2027 general elections, stakeholders have renewed calls for comprehensive electoral reforms and enhanced independence of democratic institutions, during the annual June 12 Commemoration Lecture in Abuja.
The event also marked the official unveiling of the Prof. Humphrey Nwosu Centre for Democracy and Human Rights and was organized jointly by the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) and the new centre. The lecture focused on the theme: “Electoral Integrity and the Future of Credible Elections in Nigeria.”
Speaking at the event, Dr. Tony Ojukwu, SAN, Executive Secretary of the NHRC, emphasized the relevance of the lecture in preparing Nigerians for credible, peaceful, and transparent elections. He urged election managers, policymakers, civil society groups, security agencies, media, and voters to actively engage in strengthening democratic accountability and public trust in electoral processes.
“The Annual June 12 Commemoration Lecture provides a platform to generate practical recommendations, informed reflections, and constructive ideas that can reinforce Nigeria’s democratic institutions and safeguard the integrity of upcoming elections,” Ojukwu stated.
He further highlighted the strategic partnership between the NHRC and the Prof. Humphrey N. Nwosu Centre, describing it as a collaboration founded on shared ideals of justice, inclusion, and the protection of fundamental human rights. “Democracy and human rights are inseparable. Credible elections, civic participation, freedom of expression, and accountable governance form the bedrock of a society where human rights can thrive,” he added.
Nnaemeka Nwosu, co-founder of the centre, called for a Nigeria and Africa where democracy is robust, human rights are respected, elections are credible, and leaders uphold integrity. “Let us build a nation where truth is never silenced, integrity is non-negotiable, and democracy is fiercely protected,” he said.
The lecture served as a forum to reinforce voter sensitization, encourage national dialogue, and promote institutional accountability in preparation for Nigeria’s next general elections.
