Shippers’ Council Urges Dialogue as Freight Forwarders Protest Tariff Hike

The Nigerian Shippers’ Council (NSC) has called on freight forwarders to embrace dialogue in resolving disputes over recent tariff increases by shipping companies, warning against actions that could disrupt trade.

Speaking in Lagos, the Executive Secretary of the NSC, Dr Akutah Pius, urged stakeholders in the maritime sector to avoid industrial actions that could negatively affect Nigeria’s economy.

His remarks followed protests by freight forwarders who picketed the offices of Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) over the hike in shipping line charges.

Despite the ongoing protests, the council disclosed that efforts had been made to initiate discussions with the aggrieved parties, but the protesters declined engagement.

The freight forwarders have also indicated plans to continue their protest on March 23, 2026, insisting that the increased tariffs must be reversed.

Akutah emphasised that dialogue remains the most effective approach to resolving disputes, describing it as faster, more constructive, and less disruptive than confrontational actions.

He warned that prolonged disagreements within the maritime industry could interfere with port operations and have wider implications for trade and economic stability.

While acknowledging the right of stakeholders to express grievances, the NSC boss criticised what he described as unprofessional conduct by some protesters.

He specifically condemned actions that prevented regulatory officials from accessing the premises of MSC to address the situation.

Akutah also recalled a similar protest earlier in the year, during which the council intervened and secured a temporary suspension of the disputed charges to allow for negotiations.

He reiterated the council’s commitment to mediating between shipping companies and freight forwarders to ensure fair pricing, industry stability, and smooth port operations.
