Argentine football legend Lionel Messi has reached a historic milestone, scoring his 900th career goal to join Cristiano Ronaldo as one of only two players to achieve the feat in elite men’s football.
The 38-year-old forward achieved the landmark on Wednesday during Inter Miami’s 1-1 draw against Nashville SC in the CONCACAF Champions Cup in Florida, United States
Messi’s milestone goal came via a precise left-footed strike, marking a remarkable journey that began 21 years ago when he scored his first senior goal for FC Barcelona as a teenager in 2005.
Inter Miami head coach Javier Mascherano praised Messi’s achievement, describing the record as extraordinary and highlighting his unique impact on the game.
Messi reached the 900-goal mark in 1,142 appearances for both club and country, achieving the feat in fewer matches than Ronaldo, who needed 1,236 games to hit the same milestone in 2024.
The Portuguese star currently leads with 965 career goals and is aiming to reach the historic 1,000-goal mark before retiring.
A significant portion of Messi’s goals came during his time at Barcelona, where he scored 672 goals. He also netted 32 goals for Paris Saint-Germain, 81 goals for Inter Miami, and 115 goals for the Argentina national team, with whom he won the 2022 FIFA World Cup
Known for delivering in decisive moments, Messi has scored 175 goals in knockout matches, including 35 in finals, underlining his reputation as a clutch performer.
In the UEFA Champions League, Messi has recorded 129 goals placing him second behind Ronaldo’s tally of 140.
Despite the historic achievement, the night ended on a disappointing note for Inter Miami, who were eliminated from the competition on the away goals rule after the first leg ended goalless.
