Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has issued a final warning to traders and illegal occupants on the median of the Lagos-Badagry Expressway, announcing that a large-scale demolition and clearance exercise will begin next week.
The governor gave the directive on Saturday while monitoring the monthly environmental sanitation exercise at Itire Road in Surulere Local Government Area of Lagos State.
Sanwo-Olu said the enforcement operation will target all illegal structures along the highway corridor stretching from Orile-Iganmu to Okokomaiko.
He described the encroachment on the expressway median as a violation of public infrastructure and a threat to ongoing development projects along the route.
“This is the final notice to everyone occupying the Lagos-Badagry Expressway median,” the governor said.
The governor confirmed that demolition and clearance activities will commence immediately after the notice period.
He stressed that all illegal structures used for trading or habitation on the median will be removed to restore the area to its intended purpose.
“All illegal structures and encroachments will be removed because the median is not meant for trading or habitation,” he added.
Sanwo-Olu also reiterated his administration’s commitment to environmental sanitation and improved waste management across Lagos State.
He announced the approval for the procurement of 150 additional compactor trucks to strengthen refuse collection services.
According to him, the first batch of vehicles is expected to arrive within three months.
He also disclosed plans to deploy smaller trucks to inner roads and residential estates, some of which will be locally assembled to support industrial growth.
The governor revealed that a modern material recovery and recycling facility is under development.
The plant is expected to process about 4,250 metric tonnes of waste daily, converting waste into reusable materials and reducing pressure on landfill sites.
He said the facility will become operational next year as part of broader environmental sustainability efforts.
Sanwo-Olu urged residents to support the state’s waste management reforms by paying their refuse bills promptly and complying with sanitation regulations.
He also encouraged families to instill environmental responsibility in children as part of building a cleaner Lagos.
He emphasized that effective sanitation is a shared responsibility between government, residents, and service providers.
