A member of the House of Representatives, Hon. Dakuku Peterside, said on Friday that the resolution passed by the House in relation to the Rivers Assembly crisis was to avert anarchy.
The House of Representatives on Wednesday passed a resolution, urging the National Assembly to take over the functions of the Rivers State House of Assembly.
Peterside, (PDP-Opobo/Nkoro), told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Port Harcourt that the House invoked relevant sections of the 1999 Constitution to stave off undesirable development.
He said evidence before the National Assembly showed that thugs were used to disrupt the sitting of the state legislature and cause chaos.
He added that the situation in Rivers could have endangered the nation’s nascent democracy.
He said: “The House officially invoked Section 11, sub-section four and commenced the process of taking over the functions of the Rivers State House of Assembly until such a time that the House will be able to conduct its business normally as was reflected by the 1999 constitution, severally amended.
“The House is awaiting concurrence from the Senate and from all indications the Senate will concur because all parties appreciate the fact that the situation in Rivers State portends danger for democracy, and if not checked, will indeed constitute a serious injury to our democratic health.
“The consequences of the development in Rivers State are obviously too grievous; nobody will disprove that piece of fact.’’
