Rep. Leke Abejide, the former National Leader of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has officially announced his resignation from the party, citing ongoing leadership crises as the primary reason for his departure. Abejide, who represents Yagba Federal Constituency in Kogi State in the House of Representatives, confirmed that his decision to leave ADC was a painful but necessary step to further his political career and bring more benefits to his constituents.
Addressing journalists in Abuja on Friday, the lawmaker revealed that he would be joining the “mainstream party,” a clear reference to the All Progressives Congress (APC), the ruling party in Nigeria. His resignation marks a significant shift in the political landscape, particularly as he had previously served as the National Leader of ADC.
Abejide explained that the decision to leave ADC came after the party was “unlawfully hijacked” by individuals he claimed had been expelled from other political parties they were unable to manage. According to him, these developments led him to seek legal recourse by filing a lawsuit at the Federal High Court to protect his constitutional rights and freedom of association.
The lawmaker emphasized his role in the growth of ADC, stating that he had nurtured the party to national prominence and helped fund its operations. However, he expressed disappointment that the mission and vision for the party, which he had worked towards, were disrupted by what he described as party hijackers.
“My fellow Nigerians, esteemed supporters in Yagba Federal Constituency, and citizens across Nigeria, it is with a heavy heart that I address you regarding the current turmoil in the ADC,” Abejide said. “I have had several consultations with political leaders and constituents who share my vision, which aligns with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. After much prayer and reflection, I have decided to change my political allegiance.”
Abejide also recalled that he had been allegedly expelled from the party in a move he described as unjust. He clarified, however, that he had voluntarily relinquished his membership in ADC, confirming that he was fully committed to his new political direction.
The lawmaker’s shift to APC is expected to add further weight to the party’s influence in Kogi State, where he has maintained a strong political presence. Abejide’s resignation is part of a broader trend of political realignments ahead of future elections as Nigerian politicians seek to align with more stable and influential platforms.
