The lawmaker representing Aba North and Aba South Federal Constituency, Alex Ikwechegh, has officially announced his defection to the Labour Party (LP), dismissing reports suggesting he had joined the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Ikwechegh made the disclosure while speaking with journalists in Nvosi, Isiala Ngwa South Local Government Area, shortly after meeting with Abia State Governor, Alex Otti.
According to him, the visit was to formally inform the governor of his decision and seek his support as he begins his journey in the Labour Party. He confirmed that he had already obtained his membership card.
The federal lawmaker said his move was inspired by his admiration for Governor Otti’s leadership approach and the developmental strides recorded under his administration. He described the governor as a focused and result-driven leader, adding that their political beliefs align.
Ikwechegh also praised the party’s leadership, including Sen. Nenadi Usman and Sen. Darlington Nwokocha, stating that the LP remains a suitable platform for individuals committed to progressive governance.
Addressing rumours linking him to the APC following his recent appearance at an Iftar gathering hosted by President Bola Tinubu, Ikwechegh clarified that his attendance at the event should not be interpreted as a political switch.
He emphasized that Nigeria operates a multi-party democracy where differing political interests and perspectives are normal. He maintained that while others may choose the APC, he firmly believes the Labour Party represents his convictions.
Ikwechegh further revealed that he had resigned from the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) prior to joining the LP. He encouraged residents of Abia and Nigerians at large to consider registering with the party, noting that online registration options would be made available.
He reiterated his commitment to supporting the Abia State government and stressed that politics should prioritize development and service delivery over personal ambition.
Meanwhile, the lawmaker representing Isiala Ngwa North and South Federal Constituency and Leader of the LP Caucus in the National Assembly, Chief Ginger Onwusibe, confirmed Ikwechegh’s admission into the party.
Onwusibe described the defection as a significant boost for the Labour Party ahead of the 2027 general elections. He said the National Assembly caucus had earlier welcomed Ikwechegh before his formal presentation to the governor.
He expressed optimism that Ikwechegh’s decision would strengthen the party’s influence both in Abia and at the national level.
