The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has commenced a review of its 2022 Regulations and Guidelines for Political Parties as part of preparations for the 2027 general elections.

INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, made this known on Wednesday while delivering a keynote address at a technical workshop on the revision of the commission’s regulations and guidelines in Ikot Ekpene.

Amupitan explained that the exercise became necessary following the enactment of the Electoral Act 2026, which introduced new provisions that require alignment with existing regulatory frameworks.

He noted that the updated law, signed earlier in the year, has shortened certain timelines in the electoral process, creating a more compressed operational schedule for the commission.

According to him, the workshop is aimed at harmonising INEC’s guidelines with the new legal framework to ensure greater transparency, accountability and integrity in the electoral system.

He emphasised that credible elections depend largely on the internal processes of political parties, particularly in the conduct of primary elections.

The chairman observed that weak internal democracy often leads to the imposition of unpopular candidates, which can discourage voter participation and increase pre-election litigation.

Amupitan urged party leaders to strengthen internal dispute resolution mechanisms and promote inclusive decision-making to reduce leadership conflicts that frequently spill into the courts.

He reaffirmed INEC’s commitment to serving as a neutral umpire and providing equal opportunities for all political parties.

In his goodwill message, the Country Director of the Westminster Foundation for Democracy (WFD), Mr Adebowale Olorunmola, said the Electoral Act 2026 introduced notable improvements aimed at addressing emerging electoral challenges.

He stated that while the 2022 guidelines were effective during the 2023 general elections, current political realities necessitate an updated regulatory framework.

Olorunmola expressed hope that the review would strengthen internal party democracy and enhance public confidence in the electoral process, assuring that WFD would continue to support reforms aimed at deepening democracy in Nigeria.

Also speaking, the Resident Electoral Commissioner in Akwa Ibom State, Mr Obo Effanga, stressed that the commission must adjust its regulations in line with the provisions of the new Electoral Act to ensure seamless implementation.
