The Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) in Lagos State has strongly condemned the recent abduction of students, teachers, and school administrators in Oyo State, describing the incidents as tragic and unacceptable.
Speaking to our correspondence ,PRP Lagos State Chairman James Adeshina expressed condolences to the family of the abducted teacher, Mr. Michael Oyedokun, who was reportedly killed by gunmen near Ogbomoso town.
“The repeated abduction of schoolchildren and educators is alarming. Schools should be safe spaces for learning, not targets for criminals and terrorists,” Adeshina said, urging authorities to act decisively.
The PRP chairman criticized Nigeria’s current centralized policing system, citing its limitations in effectively addressing rising insecurity. He renewed calls for the establishment of state police with proper accountability, community oversight, and constitutional safeguards.
Adeshina emphasized that localizing security and making it intelligence-driven is essential for combating kidnappings. He also called for the recruitment and proper training of more security personnel, enhanced border security, and specialized school protection units.
He further noted that socio-economic factors like unemployment, poverty, and social dislocation contribute to the rise in insecurity and must be addressed. “Swift prosecution of kidnappers and their sponsors is critical to deterring future crimes,” Adeshina added.
According to our correspondence, gunmen on motorcycles attacked three schools on Friday in Oriire Local Government Area, abducting multiple students and staff. The affected schools include Baptist Nursery and Primary School, Yawota, Community Grammar School, Ahoro-Esinele, and L.A. Primary School.
Authorities temporarily closed the schools, and the PRP urged security agencies to act promptly to secure the safe release of the abducted students and staff.
“Mass abductions cannot become normalized. Protecting citizens must go beyond political statements to tangible action,” Adeshina said.
