Following the death of one of their own, prisoners in Numan Local Government, Adamawa State went on the rampage on Monday, injuring many warders.
The riot and counter effort of warders to prevent them from escaping degenerated, forcing security agents to storm the prison yard to enforce normalcy, law and order.
The inmates went wild when the prison warders
beat one of the inmates to stupor on allegation of attempting to escape which resulted to his death early Monday.
The angry inmates pounced on the prison officials and beat some of them to stupor.
Security agents stopped them from escaping.
The injured warders were rushed to Numan General Hospital.
The anti-riot policemen and soldiers arrested a few of the prisoners who had taken advantage of the pandemonium to escape.
It was learnt that the dead convict had on Sunday night jumped the fence but was later recaptured, leading to the beating.
The state Controller of Prison, Mr. Shidi Ekijere, said the inmate may have died as a result of injuries he sustained while jumping the fence, trying to escape.
Ekijire said he was not beaten to death by warders.
