Nigeria’s Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, is expected to step down from his position in the coming days after receiving approval from President Bola Tinubu to pursue a governorship ambition.

The development was disclosed in Abuja by Tunji Bolaji, Special Adviser on Strategic Communications and Media Relations to the minister.

According to Bolaji, Adelabu recently met with President Tinubu at the Presidential Villa, where he presented a detailed report on his performance in the power sector over the past two and a half years.

During the meeting, the president reportedly commended the minister for his efforts in driving reforms and improving policy direction within the electricity sector.

Bolaji said the timing of the anticipated resignation reflects Adelabu’s intention to stabilise ongoing initiatives before exiting office.

He noted that key achievements highlighted during the meeting included measures to improve electricity generation, expand transmission infrastructure, and enhance service delivery across the power value chain.

A major focus of the presentation was the National Integrated Electricity Policy (NIEP) and its Strategic Implementation Plan (SIP), both designed to guide long-term development of Nigeria’s power sector.

The NIEP outlines strategies for achieving energy security, expanding electricity access, and integrating renewable energy into the national grid.

Meanwhile, the SIP serves as a roadmap for executing these policies, detailing timelines, responsibilities, and key interventions across generation, transmission, and distribution.

Bolaji added that the reform plan also addresses regulatory improvements, investment mobilisation, and capacity development within the sector.

He acknowledged ongoing challenges such as reduced power generation caused by gas supply constraints, pipeline maintenance, and financial obligations to gas suppliers.

Adelabu, according to the statement, expressed appreciation to President Tinubu for his support and reaffirmed his commitment to national development.

His expected resignation marks a significant political move as preparations for future elections begin to take shape.
