Misconduct: Police Service Commission dismisses 10 officers, demotes eight

Nigeria Police Force

A Police Sergeant, Mr Bonny Iweru, slummed and died on Sunday in Lagos after reportedly taking excessive alcohol.

A source at the Ebute-Ero Police Division on Lagos Island, where Iweru worked until his death, said on Wednesday that the incident happened on Sunday.

The source revealed that when a senior police officer found that the sergeant was drunk, he disarmed him.

“After the senior officer disarmed the drunken Iweru, he was detained in a cell.

“But when the officer discovered that the sergeant had collapsed, they rushed him to the Lagos Island General Hospital for medical attention.

“Medical workers at the hospital placed Iweru on drip on Saturday but he died on Sunday.

“The doctor explained that alcohol had eaten deep into Iweru’s liver.

“His corpse has been deposited at the mortuary at General Hospital.

“His family members were informed about his death and they came from Delta State to meet some senior officers at the station on Tuesday,’’ the source explained.

At the Ebute-Ero Police Station, Iweru’s colleagues were seen in groups discussing the incident.

A police officer, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said that the deceased was posted to the division in November, 2013 from the Area “C’’ Police Division at Iponri.

“Sergeant Bonny was not allowed to handle rifle in Area C, due to excessive alcohol intake,’’ the officer said.
