Peterside: Recall of Rivers overseas students on scholarship, sign of Wike’s disdain for education

Rivers State governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Dr. Dakuku Peterside, has described Governor Nyesom Wike’s recall of Rivers State students on scholarship abroad as an action that defies reason.
Reacting to the unfortunate turn of events concerning Rivers State students on scholarship at various universities across the world, Peterside wondered why a former Minister of State for Education would be caught in such a retrogressive action in an age of knowledge and enlightenment.
According to Peterside, education is an inalienable right of every citizen and any student on scholarship abroad must be allowed to round off his or her education irrespective of political situation at home.
“Wike’s recall of students abroad defies reason. It further shows him as a man who is not prepared to lead our dear state.
“Nothing demonstrates Wike’s disdain for education more than this backward action of recalling our sons and daughters who are studying abroad.

“It is incredible that anyone who has the interest of Rivers State and the interest of its children in mind can take this untoward step, given our eminent position both in human and natural resources. This becomes more confounding especially after Wike has borrowed several billions of naira for undisclosed and unjustifiable reasons.

“All these show him for who he is: somebody who does not have the interest of the future of our people at heart.

“It is not in dispute that education is the greatest tool in addressing poverty and securing the future of our youth especially with the current events in our state.
“I think Wike and his advisers need to have a rethink, and the early he reverses this unfortunate policy, the better for all of us”.
