Peter Obi Urges Nigerians to Recreate the Spirit of 1993 for 2027 Elections

The Presidential Candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has urged Nigerians to draw inspiration from the historic June 12, 1993, presidential election and work toward credible, transparent, and people-driven elections in 2027.

In a Democracy Day message shared on his X account on Friday, Obi emphasized that June 12 should serve as a moment of reflection on the state of Nigeria’s democracy and governance. He encouraged citizens to evaluate whether the country’s democratic institutions are upholding the principles symbolized by the annulled 1993 election.

“Today, we commemorate a day that should resonate deeply with all Nigerians who cherish democratic principles,” Obi stated. “Each year, June 12 invites a critical assessment of our nation, our governance, and the social contract between leaders and citizens.”

Obi questioned whether contemporary elections reflect the transparency and fairness of the 1993 exercise, noting that the day remains a symbol of both reflection and aspiration. He described June 12 as the emotional and structural foundation of Nigeria’s democratic identity, representing the tragedy of the annulled election and the enduring strength of the people’s democratic will.

The former Labour Party presidential candidate called on Nigerians to understand the historical significance of June 12 and to carry its ideals forward into the 2027 elections. “A New Nigeria of true democracy is possible,” Obi added.
