PDP Senator Dumps Party for ADC Ahead of 2027 Elections

Senator Binos Yaroe who represents Adamawa South Senatorial District has officially joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC), citing the need to preserve a strong opposition in Nigeria

Yaroe announced his defection during an interaction with journalists on Saturday in Yola, the capital of Adamawa State

The lawmaker said his departure from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) was motivated by his belief in the importance of maintaining political balance in Nigeria’s democratic system.

According to him, democracy functions best when opposition voices remain active and influential.

He warned that if all politicians align with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), the country could drift toward a one-party political structure.

Yaroe revealed that his move is part of a broader strategy involving several opposition lawmakers from different political parties.

He disclosed that about nine senators from parties including the Labour Party All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), and the PDP had agreed to align with the ADC.

The objective, he said, is to strengthen the opposition ahead of the 2027 general elections

The senator explained that after formally resigning from the PDP on February 19 he engaged in consultations with political associates, supporters, and stakeholders before finalising his decision.

He also met with constituents across the nine Local Government Areas within his senatorial district to seek their input.

Yaroe said these consultations played an important role in shaping his political decision.

According to the lawmaker, internal divisions within the PDP contributed significantly to his decision to leave the party.

He noted that ongoing factional disputes have created uncertainty about the party’s leadership and direction.

Yaroe said the situation made it difficult for political aspirants to confidently pursue elections under the PDP platform.

The senator also cited political loyalty to former Vice President  Atiku Abubakar as part of the reason behind his move.

He explained that Atiku had supported his political career at key moments, including during the PDP senatorial primaries in 2019 and his re-election to the Senate in 2023.

Yaroe said it would be politically inconsistent for him to align with a different political camp while Atiku remains a key figure in the emerging ADC coalition.
