The Social Democratic Party (SDP) has dismissed reports claiming its Osun State chapter has adopted the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate, Bola Oyebamiji, ahead of the state’s August 15 governorship election.
The party described as false a letter circulating online which allegedly stated that the SDP had dissolved its political structure in support of the APC candidate.
The controversy followed reports that a factional chairman of the party in Osun, Remi Omidire, had purportedly written to the APC State Chairman, Tajudeen Lawal, announcing the adoption of Oyebamiji for the forthcoming election.
Responding to the development on Wednesday, the Chairman of the SDP State Chairmen Forum, Femi Olaniyi, popularly known as Ferrari, said the claims did not reflect the position of the party’s recognized leadership in Osun.
According to Olaniyi, the letter attributed to Omidire was fabricated and did not originate from the legitimate SDP leadership in the state headed by Funsho Fabiyi.
He maintained that the party had neither entered into any political alliance nor surrendered its structure to the APC or any other political party.
Olaniyi stressed that the SDP remains committed to participating fully in the Osun governorship election and has not withdrawn from the contest.
He described the alleged endorsement as an attempt by individuals to mislead the public and create confusion within the political landscape ahead of the poll.
The party also warned those responsible for circulating what it called false information to stop immediately, cautioning that legal action could be taken against anyone found spreading misinformation.
Reaffirming the party’s position, Olaniyi urged members, supporters and the public to ignore the reports, insisting that the SDP remains focused on its campaign and democratic objective of seeking electoral victory in Osun State.
