The Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA) has stepped into the case of a widow who allegedly faced threats, assault and intimidation from members of her late husband’s family in Ikorodu, as police confirmed the arrest of a suspect.
The agency disclosed on Wednesday that it became aware of the incident after reports gained attention on social media, prompting immediate action to ensure the safety of the woman and her children.
According to the DSVA, the widow alleged that following her husband’s death, some of his relatives threatened her, physically assaulted her and attempted to take possession of her late husband’s property.
The survivor also informed the agency that she had earlier reported the matter to the Owutu Police Division, where an investigation was already underway.
Following the report, the agency said it immediately contacted the police officers handling the case to obtain an update and ensure appropriate intervention.
Preliminary information received from investigators indicated that the alleged suspect had been arrested and remained in police custody while investigations continue.
The DSVA reiterated the Lagos State Government’s commitment to protecting survivors of domestic and gender-based violence, assuring the public that the case would be pursued in line with the law.
The agency also pledged continued support for the widow and her children throughout the legal process.
It commended residents, civil society groups and other partners who quickly alerted authorities to the incident, noting that timely reporting plays a critical role in strengthening the state’s response to sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV).
The agency encouraged members of the public to continue reporting cases of domestic abuse and sexual violence through its official communication channels, emphasizing that combating SGBV requires collaboration between government agencies, communities and other stakeholders.
