Okunnu at 93: Ansar-ud-Deen Celebrates a Pillar of Integrity, Service and Visionary Leadership

As Ansar-ud-Deen Society of Nigeria marks the 93rd birthday of elder statesman and legal icon, Lateef Femi Okunnu, tributes have poured in celebrating not just his longevity, but the extraordinary depth of his influence on national development and faith-based institution building.

In a statement issued by its National President, Mosediq Adeniji Kazeem, SAN, FCArb, the Society described Okunnu as a rare blend of intellect, integrity and institutional foresight whose life has become a reference point for principled leadership in Nigeria.

At 93, Okunnu stands as more than a nonagenarian celebrant; he represents a living archive of Nigeria’s political and legal evolution. From his distinguished service as former Federal Commissioner of Works to his enduring presence in national discourse, he has consistently embodied discipline, courage and clarity of thought.

Within Ansar-ud-Deen, his role transcends that of a trustee or elder. He has been a stabilizing force and strategic guide, shaping policy direction and institutional growth. The Society particularly acknowledged his landmark donation of a large parcel of land — a transformative gesture that has since become a vital financial backbone for the repositioning and expansion of its programmes. The intervention reflects not only philanthropy, but a deliberate vision to secure the Society’s future.

Beyond material contributions, Okunnu’s greatest asset remains his mind and moral authority. Revered as a custodian of history, he possesses an exceptional recollection of events that shaped Lagos and Nigeria at large, offering context and wisdom in moments of institutional or national reflection. His counsel, members say, continues to command respect across generations.

His mentorship culture has equally defined his legacy.

Many young professionals and community leaders attribute their growth to his quiet guidance, discipline and insistence on excellence. His influence stretches beyond religious circles into academia, governance and civic leadership, including his meaningful support for Summit University.

A Senior Advocate of Nigeria and recipient of the national honour of Commander of the Order of the Niger (CON), Okunnu is widely regarded as one of Nigeria’s most respected legal minds. Yet, those closest to him say his greatest distinction lies in character — a steadfast commitment to faith, community advancement and national unity.

As Ansar-ud-Deen celebrates this milestone, it does so in recognition of a man whose life has become intertwined with its progress — a beacon of integrity whose legacy continues to inspire both the present generation and those yet to come.
